DETROIT -- Reggie Bushs long run was a highlight -- one the Detroit Lions nearly wasted with the kinds of mistakes they can ill afford once the season starts. "The big thing that kind of hurt us tonight were penalties and turnovers," quarterback Matthew Stafford said. "You have those, you make it tough on yourself. We cant do that." Bushs 86-yard touchdown gave the Lions an early lead, and they eventually came away with a 13-12 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night. But Detroit also turned the ball over three times and committed 15 penalties, looking a lot like the team that frittered away a playoff spot last season because of costly mistakes in close games. Calvin Johnson played for the first time this preseason, catching two passes for 27 yards, but Stafford was intercepted once and the Lions struggled in the red zone. Blake Bortles threw for 158 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars. Jacksonville started Chad Henne, but Bortles -- the third pick in this years draft -- was impressive in relief. He completed 10 of 16 passes, including a 13-yard touchdown to Allen Hurns. The Jaguars were about as mistake-prone as the Lions, turning the ball over twice and committing 12 penalties for 101 yards. Detroits 15 penalties went for 131 yards, including a roughing the passer call on Ndamukong Suh. "For the most part, I havent seen too many (penalties) that were simply physical -- that they couldnt do anything about it," said Detroit coach Jim Caldwell, who took over in the off-season after Jim Schwartz was fired. "The ones we had were preventable, and thats what well work on." Detroit was stopped on fourth down inside the Jacksonville 5-yard line in the first half, and Mikel Leshoure lost a fumble deep in Jaguars territory in the fourth quarter. Ryan Broyles had a fumble at the Jacksonville 1 overturned on replay. George Winn scored from there to give Detroit a 13-12 lead with 7:12 remaining. Even when Detroits top players were in, the Lions struggled at times. Stafford nearly had two passes intercepted on the first drive, but Bush scored on his long run later in the quarter, showing he can still outrun defensive backs in the open field. "My whole mentality was just not to get caught from behind," Bush said. "I dont want to come back to the sideline and have guys talking trash and laughing at me that I got caught from behind." Stafford was intercepted by defensive end Andre Branch on the first play of Detroits third possession. Jacksonvilles Josh Scobee kicked a 38-yard first-quarter field goal but was replaced by Kasey Redfern because of a quadriceps injury. Redfern made a 34-yarder in the second quarter but had a 45-yard attempt blocked in the third. Henne went 9 of 14 for 70 yards and avoided any major mistakes. But Bortles, the first quarterback taken in this years draft, was able to move the Jaguars down the field. Jacksonville started at its own 5 with 1:43 remaining in the first half, and Bortles was able to guide the Jaguars into position for Redferns kick as time expired. In the third quarter, Bortles took the Jaguars from their own 14 to the Detroit 27 before Redferns kick was blocked by Xavier Proctor. On its next drive, Jacksonville went 49 yards in four plays for its only touchdown. Coach Gus Bradley maintains that Henne is still the starter, and Bortles seems fine with that at this point. "This has been a perfect situation for me, because it has been a stress-free learning experience," Bortles said. "I knew on Day One that Chad was going to be the starter, and Ive been able to just focus on learning from him. When hes on the field, Im his biggest fan, because I want to see things going right and learn how it works in the NFL." Hurns had seven catches for 113 yards. Jacksonvilles Denard Robinson, a star quarterback when he was at Michigan in nearby Ann Arbor, got a nice cheer from the crowd in the first quarter when he made a tackle on special teams. NOTES: Detroit FB Montell Owens was evaluated for a possible first-quarter head injury, and Caldwell said he didnt have an update afterward. Lions LB Kyle Van Noy sat out with an abdominal injury. ... Bradley said Scobees injury wasnt too serious, but DT David Carter left in the fourth quarter with a sprained MCL, and DT SenDerrick Marks is expected to have an MRI on a shoulder injury. FS Winston Guy Jr. hurt his left ankle, but tests came back negative. Cheap Yeezy China . So what happens? Hi Kerry, Im sure youve received many emails wondering what your take is on the Spezza goal that looked like Neil blatantly kicked it in while standing directly in the middle of the crease where, you know, usually a goalie is to make a save but couldnt be due to Neil being there! Now theyre sweeping out their front office. Owner Jimmy Haslam announced Tuesday that CEO Joe Banner will step down in the next two months and general manager Michael Lombardi is leaving the team. "Mike and Joe have left us in good position in terms of free agency and cap space as well as this years draft, where we have 10 overall picks and three of the first 35," Haslam said at a news conference. Its yet another stunning development for a franchise that has undergone nearly constant change in the past 15 years. Haslam also said assistant GM Ray Farmer, who was pursued by Miami to be the Dolphins GM this winter, has been promoted and will immediately take the over the teams football operations and lead the Browns during free agency and draft. Cleveland has two first-round picks in Mays draft and is well under the salary cap to spend on free agents. Haslam added that president Alec Scheiner will keep his current role. "Alec Scheiner will run our business side and remain as president, Mike Pettine will be our head coach and Ray Farmer will be our GM," Haslam said. "We will not have a CEO and those three people will report directly to me." The shake-up comes one month after the Browns finally hired coach Mike Pettine. Banner and Haslam had fired coach Rob Chudzinski after a 4-12 season, the teams sixth straight with at least 11 losses. Wisconsin said Tuesday that coach Gary Andersen was contacted by the Cleveland Browns for their coaching vacancy but decided not to pursue the position following a conversation with the NFL team, which spent 25 days to hire Pettine. "Mike will have final say on the 45-man roster-- who plays on Sundays-- and Ray will have final say on the 53-plaayer roster," Haslam said.dddddddddddd Banner, who previously worked in Philadelphia, was hired by Haslam to run the team shortly after his ownership was approved by the league in 2012. "We appreciate Joes contributions to the Cleveland Browns, especially in helping us as new owners," Haslam said in a release. "He was committed to creating a successful organization and bringing in talented individuals. We thank him for his work and dedication. We wish him and his family the best." Banner will transition out of his job over the next two months. "It is bittersweet leaving the Browns organization," Banner said. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Jimmy Haslam and helping him set the infrastructure for this franchise. I am proud of the talented individuals we brought in to help lead this team and feel that the Cleveland Browns are in good hands moving forward." Lombardis departure ends a curious second stint with the team. His hiring was widely panned by some Cleveland media members and many fans because of his time with coach Bill Belichick when he was Clevelands coach. Lombardi kept a low profile over the past year in Cleveland and was not in attendance at any major news conferences. "Were also grateful for Mike Lombardis efforts and commitment since rejoining our organization," Haslam said. "He is an experienced and creative NFL executive with a unique ability to see the big picture. He has tremendous instincts and I know hell be a valuable addition to any NFL organization. We simply wanted to give Ray this opportunity that hes earned. We wanted to move forward under his leadership and capabilities." AP Sports Writer Tom Withers in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, contributed to this report. ' ' 'imbledon champion Murray, who outlasted the 23rd-seeded Monfils 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 1-6, 6-0 on Chatrier. After rolling past four unseeded players, Nadal faced his first big test at the 2014 French championships when he came up against the world No. 5 Ferrer. Ferrer stunned Nadal by taking the first set, but Nadal promptly rebounded to claim the second. The bout then turned into a runaway affair for the reigning champ, who also had to beat out impending darkness in Paris for his 33rd straight match win here. The 13-time Grand Slam winner captured a fourth straight French Open title and eighth overall championship here a year ago by besting Ferrer in the finale. Nadal, who turned 28 on Tuesday, is now 22-6 lifetime against the 32- year-old Ferrer, including a perfect 4-0 mark at Roland Garros. Ferrer upset Nadal on some clay in Monte Carlo back in April. The amazing Nadal is trying to become the first man to capture five straight French Open championships. The Murray-Monfils match was a see-saw affair, as the British star pounced on the Frenchman for a two-sets-to-love lead, only to see the 2008 French Open semifinalist Monfils turn thinggs around by stunningly taking sets three and four.dddddddddddd. After the fourth set, Murray sat in his chair and complained to the tournament referee about the darkening conditions at 9:20 p.m. local time, but it was decided the two men would play on. Murray appeared to struggle mightily with some sore legs in the fourth set against Monfils, but he showed no signs of problems in a lopsided fifth, which was played out in a mere 24 minutes as the stunned French faithful looked on. The 27-year-old Murray will appear in his second French Open semi. He missed the event last year due to injury. Nadal and Murray will meet for a 20th time on the ATP World Tour, with the mighty Spaniard leading their all-time series, 14-5, including a 5-0 record on clay. Nadal beat the two-time Grand Slam titlist Murray in a French Open semi three years ago. Fridays other semifinal will pit second-seeded former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic against 18th-seeded Ernests Gulbis, who will appear in his first-ever major semi. Djokovic will perform in his sixth French Open final four (1-4) and is 4-1 in his career versus Gulbis. The six-time major champion Djokovic was the French Open runner-up two years ago and still needs this title to complete a career Grand Slam. And if he wins the championship this week he would also reclaim the world No. 1 ranking. The 27-year-old Djokovic is a 22-time Grand Slam semifinalist. The 25-year-old Gulbis is currently riding a nine-match winning streak and already owns a pair of titles in France this season, including one in Nice just one day before the French Open commenced. Hes 13-0 on French soil for the year. Gulbis has not lost to a seeded player at a Grand Slam event since the 2010 Australian Open, compiling a 5-0 mark. ' ' '
